Initial election results of Thai Farmers’ Councilors announced

BANGKOK, Feb 17 (TNA) - Unofficial results of Thailand's recent but first-ever election of the Farmers Council at the village-level nationwide have been publicly announced, with 65,537 elected members and an electorate turnout of some 52.4 per cent.

Thai Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Theera Wongsamut made the announcement, saying that of the elected 65,537 Farmers Councilors at the village level, 17,013 won the election by defeating their rival candidates and the remaining 48,524 won the election in areas where there were single candidates each.

Theera acknowledged that the election of Thailand's Farmers' Council has not yet been held in Kantaralak District of the northeastern Si Sa Ket Province due to ongoing border rows between Thailand and Cambodia.

The minister said, however, that he expects the election in Kantaralak will be held before March 6.

Meanwhile, the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is preparing for the forthcoming election of the country's Farmers' Council at the sub-district level--scheduled for March 28-30. (TNA)
