Commerce authorities actively promoting Thailand overseas

BANGKOK, Feb 16 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce's Department of Intellectual Property has launched a project to build up Thailand's new image globally on its creative economy--based on the government's 2012 Thai Khem Khaeng or "Strong Thailand" economic stimulus program.

Thai Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot said on Wednesday (Feb 16) that, as part of the project, the Department of Intellectual Property and the Queen Sirikit Department of Sericulture have jointly selected Thailand's 100 best silk fabrics to produce a book to specially promote the excellent quality of Thai silk and to boost demand for Thai silk internationally.

Alongkorn revealed that concerned Thai authorities will also organize a contest on contemporary Thai silk designs--in which local students and youths are encouraged to take part to enhance their skills in developing silk fabric patterns.

In 2010, Thailand exported silk and silk products worth some 683 million baht totally--with the United States being the most important and biggest market for silk products shipped from Thailand and even other countries worldwide.

Thai silk products shipped to the United States alone last year reached some 206 million baht, followed by Japan worth 89 million baht, the United Kingdom worth 56 million baht; while France, Singapore, Canada, Belgium, Hong Kong and Italy have been emerging to be potential markets for Thai silk products.

According to the Thai deputy commerce minister, if unique Thai silk products become widely popular among international consumers, its global demand will increase. Alongkorn suggested that designs and practicality of Thai silk products be improved to add their market values and to become a high-end symbol of Thailand. (TNA)
