Thai FM urges Cambodia to heed UNSC resolution

NEW YORK, Feb 16 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya has urged Cambodia to follow a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution issued on February 14 calling on bilateral negotiations between Bangkok and Phnom Penh to resolve their border rows.

Kasit gave an interview with the CNN channel in New York at about 6.30am on Wednesday (Feb 16), Thailand's time, on progress for attempts or moves to resolve pending border issues between Thailand and Cambodia in line with the UNSC resolution, saying that Cambodian Premier Hun Sen should heed the UNSC resolution.

Kasit noted that Thailand always welcomes negotiations and never wants any confrontation with neighbouring Cambodia but having to protect national sovereignty and territory, and that bilateral negotiations under the supervision of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), in which both Thailand and Cambodia are members, should be enough without any intervention by the United Nations.

The Thai foreign minister said that he has not talked with his Cambodian counterpart Hor Namhong, who is also Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister, after the UNSC's closed-door meeting in New York--at which the resolution was issued.

Meanwhile, police have patrolled all border villages in Kantaralak District of Thailand's northeastern Si Sa Ket Province to ensure safety for local people--who have returned home after being evacuated to temporary shelters during a spate of clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops early this month.

The intensified police patrols have boosted the local villagers' morale, prevent thefts and unrest to be incited by any third party, as shops have re-opened and the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border appears to be returning to normal. (TNA)
