New Doha Airport to be Opened in Dec

Doha, February 16 (QNA) - Work is in full swing to inaugurate the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) by the year-end, Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) Chairman and Managing Director Abdulaziz al-Noaimi has said.
"We are hoping that the new airport would be opened on Qatar s National Day on December 18," he told reporters in Doha yesterday.
Al-Noaimi said about 80% of the project works had already been completed. A major chunk of the works is being executed by Qatari companies.
A QCAA presentation at the Doha Aviation Summit in November last year said NDIA will be the world s first airport to be specifically designed for the larger A380s (Airbus Super Jumbo). Qatar Airways has ordered a total of five such aircraft.
The initial capacity of NDIA will be 24mn passengers a year and more than doubling to around 50mn by the time it is fully functional beyond 2015. The first phase of NDIA features two runways (4,850m and 4,250m), a 219,000sqm three-storey terminal, 25,000sqm of retail space, a cargo facility with a capacity of 750,000 tones a year, a free trade zone and business park, Qatar Airways headquarters building, and a people-mover or suspended monorail that will transport passengers through the terminal.
It is also set to create 50,000 jobs in Qatar.
The state-of-the-art terminal will have some 42 contact gates, six dedicated for Airbus superjumbo A380.
The passport control at the new terminal complex would have some 40 immigration check points with additional 12 electronic gates for economy passengers.
In all, there will be 18 dedicated check points with five electronic gates for first and business class passengers.
Al-Noaimi said QCAA sponsored some 165 Qataris including women to take up various technical positions that will become available with the opening of the new airport.
