Thailand-Cambodia to carry on business links despite border dispute

BANGKOK, Feb 16 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot has confirmed that he and Thai Deputy Prime Minister Trairong Suwannakhiri will pay an official visit to Cambodia as scheduled, from February 17-20, to open a Thai trade fair and to attend a meeting of the Thai-Cambodian Business Council--despite ongoing border rows between the two neighbouring countries.

Alongkorn acknowledged that bilateral trade between Thailand and Cambodia will carry on in parallel with attempts to resolve political woes related to unsettled border issues.

Alongkorn revealed that he and Deputy Premier Trairong, who oversees national economic affairs, are also scheduled to meet Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in Phnom Penh on February 17--during which bilateral trade and other issues under cooperative frameworks of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will be discussed in preparation for the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015.

The Thai deputy commerce minister said that he believes demand for Thai products in Cambodia remains high; so, he will raise measures to further promote bilateral trade with Cambodia, particularly border trade, during ministerial-level talks--which will also be held during his four-day visit to the neighbouring country, noting that two-way trade between Thailand and Cambodia reached over 81 billion baht last year, a 40 per cent year-on-year surge, with border trade alone accounting for 50 billion baht.
