NATO Deputy Secretary Says Partnership with Gulf States Should be Deepened

Doha, February 15 (QNA) - NATO Deputy Secretary General Claudio Bisogniero has underlined that the Alliance attaches great importance to peace and stability in the Gulf region, as NATO Heads of State and Government states at the NATO Summit in Lisbon last November.
Addressing the opening session of the ICI Public Diplomacy Ambassadorial Conference on Deepening the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative Partnership, Bisogniero said " Because security in the broader Middle East is of importance far beyond the region, Your security and our security are intertwined.
" Because time has come to give fresh momentum to NATO's relations with our four partners in the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, Bisogniero said " let me underline that we are also very interested in deepening our dialogue with Oman and Saudi Arabia. We would welcome their participation in the ICI."
He explained that since the launch of the ICI in 200, there have been more and more opportunities for political dialogue and practical cooperation in the security field, both in a bilateral and a multilateral framework, adding "As a matter of fact, hundreds of activities are made available today by NATO for possible cooperation with the ICI countries".
NATO Deputy Secretary General said referred to 'uncertain times' explaining that technological progress has shrunk geographical distances, and access to information across the globe, is east an immediate. But he said '' At the same time, we are confronted by common threats - terrorism and piracy, cyber attacks and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, disruptioins of the flow of energy and other resources on which our nations depend."
He said no single country, nor any single organization, can meet such complex challenges on its own adding that '' the challenges are multi-dimensional, our response has to be multidimensional too."
On what NATO has to offer, Bisogniero said " First, we will offer all our partners greater opportunities for consultation on security issues on common concern.
" Second: we give all our partners greater access to the full range of the Alliance's cooperation initiative. We will fully open our tool-box and let you choose, including in areas that I know you find important, such as military-to-military cooperation, information and intelligence sharing and security sector reform."
