Koh Phaluay to become Thailand’s first-ever green energy Island

BANGKOK, Feb 16 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Energy has introduced its unprecedented alternative energy development initiative for Koh Phaluay in southern Thailand--aimed to turn the island to become a completely-100 per cent-clean energy-based landmark community.

Former Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suwat Liptapanlop, in his capacity as the Thai Energy Ministry’s command committee on events in honour of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 60th coronation anniversary and 84th birthday, said on Wednesday (Feb 16) that the Thai Energy Ministry’s pilot project on the “Green Island”, set to be launched on February 19, will fully build-up the clean alternative energy system to the island with standard public facilities.

Koh Phaluai, a 15-square-kilometre-island with some 438 residents in 180 mostly fishing households, is located to the west of Samui Island in Thailand’s southern resort Surat Thani Province.

Meanwhile, Krairirk Nilkuha, Director-General of the ministry’s Department of Alternative Energy Development and Conservation, said that environmental exhibitions and demonstrations in honour of and in commemoration of His Majesty the King's visit to the island on 1972 will also be held as part of the launch of the project--highlighted with those on alternative energy technologies and projects on the development of quality of life of communal villagers and local eco-tourism.
