Thailand launches IFOAM standard for organic farm products

BANGKOK, Feb 14 (TNA) - Thailand has launched the IFOAM standard--which refers to International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements--aimed to reduce confusion among consumers on different standards of organic products and to improve organic agriculture in the country.

Pimpapan Charnsilp, Thailand's Deputy Permanent Secretary for Commerce, and Witoon Panyakul, President of the Thai Organic Trade Association, jointly launched the IFOAM standard in Bangkok on Monday (Feb 14)--simultaneously with its introduction by other countries in six global regions reflecting the rapidly growing business of organic products.

In Asia, the IFOAM certification is available in six countries, including China, India, Israel, Japan, South Korea and Thailand. So, it is a good opportunity for Thai organic farm produce to enter into overseas markets, paving the way for Thailand to become a hub of organic agricultural products in Southeast Asia in the future.

Global organic business is growing rapidly in the food industry by some 15-20 per cent annually--with over 100 countries now exporting organic farm products. (TNA)
