Thailand, Cambodia set to report border disputes to UNSC

BANGKOK, Feb 14 (TNA) The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is scheduled to hold a closed-door meeting in New York today (local time) to discuss border disputes between Thailand and Cambodia, as Thai government MPs plan to file a letter with the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on February 16 to oppose Cambodia’s management plan for the ancient Preah Vihear Temple and its vicinity.

The UNSC was set to kick off the closed-door session in response to Cambodia's complaint at 10am (local time), or about 10pm in Thailand in the same day, in which its 15 member countries, including five permanent members and 10 other non-permanent ones take part.

According to Thai Foreign Ministry Spoksman Thani Thongphakdi, the UNSC deputy secretary-general, who supervises political affairs, will brief the council on issues between Thailand and Cambodia. Then Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hor Namhong and Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya will speak before the council, followed by the Indonesian foreign minister, as Indonesia currently chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)--in which both Thailand and Cambodia are members. Afterwards the UNSC will express its opinion. Kasit will reportedly announce the outcome of the UNSC meeting via phone to the Thai Foreign Ministry Tuesday morning (Feb 15).

Meanwhile, Democrat Party Spokesman Dr. Buranat Samutharak said that over 100 MPs of Thailand's ruling Democrat Party and other coalition parties will file their letter with UNESCO on February 16 to oppose Cambodia’s plan to manage the Preah Vihear Temple and its vicinity as a World Heritage site unilaterally.
