Interior ministry allocates special budget for flood victims
BANGKOK, Aug 16 (TNA) -- Thailand's interior ministry has allocated a special budget to assist flood victims in northern and northeastern provinces, especially those which sit on the swelling Mekong River, said Pol. Gen. Kowit Wattana, deputy prime minister and interior minister.
Pol. Gen. Kowit said he is worried about flooding situation in the two regions, especially in the northernmost province of Chiang Rai and the three northeastern provinces – Nong Khai, Mukdahan and Nakhon Phanom – which are now under floodwaters after the water level in the Mekong Riveroverflowed its banks.
He said he had ordered provincial governors whose provinces are battered by the current floods to help flood victims and to distribute seedlingsand help pay money as compensation to victims whose property were damaged.
Deputy Interior Minister Prasong Kositanond is scheduled to travel to NongKhai province Sunday to boost morale and help flood victims.
Meanwhile, Deputy Public Health Minister Vicharn Minchainant said before leaving for Nong Khai that the governor and public health officials in the province had been ordered to provide special care to flood victims and to be on alert for diseases which could easily break out during the floodseason.
Mr. Vicharn said he had received a report that an eight-year-old victimwas drowned while most people still had good health.
