BANGALORE, February 14 (Itar-Tass) -- The Russian-Indian enterprise
BrahMos Aerospace has developed a missile for underwater firing, its test
launch is to be made in 2011, executive director of the enterprise
Sivathanu Pillai told journalists on Monday.
As was reported, a supersonic cruise missile intended for submarines
was developed at the Russian-Indian joint venture.
The enterprise was set up in India in 1998 to produce supersonic
antisubmarine missiles. The Russian NPO of Machine-Building situated in
Reutovo near Moscow and the Defence Researches and Developments
Organization (DRDO) of the Indian Defence Ministry became its founders.
The missile BrahMos is developed on the basis of the Russian missile
Yakhont which has similar characteristics. High speed, diversity of
possible tactical application schemes, high technological compatibility of
missiles of different (sea, underwater, air and shore) types of
dislocation are considered to be the main merits of the missiles of this
type.
