ORNAMENTAL FISH INDUSTRY CAN BRING IN SOME US$90 MLN REVENUE

SERDANG (Malaysia), Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The country's ornamental fish industry is expected to meet its annual production of 800 million fish and bring in revenue of RM300 million (US$90.90 million) by 2010, Fisheries director-general Junaidi Che Ayob said.

He said Malaysia was now the world's second largest producer of ornamental fish, with more than 90 percent of its production exported to more than 90countries.

"We are now breeding more than 250 species of ornamental fish, including 550 types of local and exotic fish, for the local and world markets," he said atthe launch of the Aquafair Malaysia here Saturday.

Junaidi said ornamental fish had high value and could provide breederswith a profit margin of between 40 and 50 percent.

Last year, Malaysia produced 679 million ornamental fish, worth aboutRM192 million (US$58.18 million).

The Aquafair Malaysia 2008, which is organised by the Fisheries Department will be held for four days, from Nov 20, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre(KLCC).
