Court to forum jury panel for lawyer Markelov murder case trial
MOSCOW, February 15 (Itar-Tass) - The Moscow City Court on Tuesday
will form a jury panel for considering the case of murder of lawyer
Stanislav Markelov and reporter Anastasia Baburova committed in January 2009.
At the closed-door meeting, the trial participants will select 12 main and at least two extra jurors who are to determine if the defendants'guilt is proven. Then the date of the case consideration on the merits will be appointed.
Yevgeniya Khasis and Nikita Tikhonov are charged with the murder and the illegal purchase, possession and carrying of weapons. In addition, Tikhonov is charged under Article 327 part 3 of the RF Criminal Code - "Counterfeiting, making or sale of false documents, state awards, stamps, seals and letterheads."
According to the Prosecutor General's Office, Tikhonov together with Khasis and other unidentified members of an organised group who share neo-fascist and nationalist views, on January 19, 2009 murdered lawyer of the Inter-Republic Bar Association (Moscow) Stanislav Markelov a freelance correspondent for the Novaya Gazeta daily Anastasia Baburova who accompanied him. According to investigators, murder motives were "intolerance, ideological hatred and enmity, which the defendants had against the lawyer in connection with his professional activity to protect the rights and freedoms of a number of persons adhering to antifascist ideology."
