International Year of Chemistry opening in Moscow

MOSCOW, February 15 (Itar-Tass) - The opening ceremony of the
International Year of Chemistry (IYC) will be held at the Grand Hall of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow on Tuesday.
It was declared by the United Nations on the initiative of the
International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). The National Committee of Russian Chemists, supported by the international chemical community, was its initiator.
"The purpose of such event is to remind humanity how important the
further development of chemistry for the growth of well-being is, to fight disease and poverty, to maintain the ecological health of our planet," Director of the Institute of Chemistry and Sustainable Development of the D. I. Mendeleyev Chemical Technology University, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Natalya Tarasova said. "And, perhaps most importantly - the year of chemistry will help to attract a new generation of talented students to chemical and related specialities, and enthusiastic and dedicated to science researchers - to academic chemical centres."
In addition, according to organisers, the International Year of
Chemistry aims to intensify the work of national chemical societies and educational institutions to promote the role of chemistry in solving global problems of mankind, to serve as a catalyst for the development of international relations. The known phrase "chemistry reaches out widely into human affairs" must make room to the motto "Chemistry - our life, our future," which "emphasises the crucial role of this science in sustainable development of humankind."
It is assumed that the International Year of Chemistry will give an opportunity to promote the role of science in building a sustainable developing society and to promote scientific education of the younger generation, say the event's initiators.
