South Australian man appeals house of horrors conviction
AAP - A man jailed over his role in starving five children in Adelaide is appealing his conviction.
Michael Quinlivan, 27, was sent to prison for nine years with a six-year non-parole period for abusing five siblings aged between four and seven years-old over a four-month period in 2008.
He launched an appeal against his conviction on Monday, asking the South Australian Supreme Court to look at an appeal brief that his lawyers prepared before they were refused any more legal aid funding.
He will represent himself when he returns to court on Thursday.
He was sentenced on Friday for the abuse of the five children in what has been described as "house of horrors" in Adelaide's northern suburbs.
The five siblings were among 21 children living in the house with six adults.
Five of the adults, including the children's mother, who cannot be named, and the ringleader, Tania Staker, 36, have been jailed over the abuse.
Justice Kevin Duggan said they were all involved in the daily routine of cruel punishment and the deterioration of the children would have been obvious to everyone in the house, which was not fit for human habitation.
