Yemen destroys 6712 mines collected from three provinces
destroyed near Lahj province 6712 mines and explosives, including avariety of missiles, detonators and fuses.
The NDC carried out on Thursday the first phase of the destruction process of mines after collecting them over the post six months during clearing operations of several fields from the provinces ofAden, Abyan and Lahj.
The NDC also destroyed in last May 1095 pieces of mines, missiles and explosives after collecting them over three months duringclearing operations of several fields in Lahj, Abyan and Taiz.
The chairman of the NDC Qassem al-Ajam said that nearby regions to housings and agriculture and investment lands have been cleaned of land mines and unexploded shells, adding that the government seeksto get rid of 24 minefields in Abyan province.
Al-Ajam said that Yemen plans to clean the country of mines by March 2009, adding that his country may not be able to achieve this goaldue to lack of funding for demining projects.
The mines in Yemen were the leavings of four different wars, the first civil war between the republicans and the royalists in the north of the country, which lasted from 1962 to 1975, the second war for liberation which took place in the south of Yemen, which continued during the period from 1967 to 1973, the third war lasted from 1970 until 1983 between the north and the south and the fourthwar was the Yemeni civil war of 1994.
