ACT police shoot, kill knife-wielding man
Police have shot dead a man armed with a knife and meat cleaver after being called to a domestic disturbance in Canberra.
The 27-year-old man died from a single fatal shot to his chest.
The police shooting is the second in the ACT in a little over two weeks.
On January 27, police shot a middle-aged man who was wielding an axe. The man was taken to hospital and survived.
In the latest incident, police responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at a house in the southern Canberra suburb of Wanniassa at about 5am (AEDT) on Sunday.
Police spoke to the man for about 30 minutes at the house.
He then emerged armed with a knife and a meat cleaver.
"Police made numerous requests for the 27-year-old man to drop his weapons and have withdrawn to approximately 300 metres away," a police spokeswoman said in a statement.
But the man followed, continually approaching the police officers.
The six officers at the scene continued to call on the man to drop the knife and cleaver.
ACT Police Commander Bruce Hill said the man lunged at officers.
"Unfortunately the police officer was forced to discharge his firearm in protection of his own life," Mr Hill told reporters.
"The bullet hit the chest of the individual and he fell to the ground."
The officers attempted resuscitation and the man was also treated by the ACT Ambulance service but died at the scene.
The shooting is being investigated by ACT Policing's criminal investigations team on behalf of the coroner.
