Most Arab countries in Gulf refrain from comments on events in Egypt
EL KUWAIT, February 12 (Itar-Tass) -- Most Arab countries in the Gulf have so far refrained from comments on Friday's events in Egypt. The first reaction to the resignation of Hosni Mubarak was from Qatar, whose Emir had a complex relationship with the Egyptian president. In a statement released in Doha the transfer of power in Cairo to the Supreme Military Council of the armed forces was described as a positive and important step.
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman have made no official
statements so far. Earlier, Riyadh issued statements in support of
Mubarak, and most recently it granted asylum to the president of Tunisia, Zine El Abidine al-Ali, deposed in a popular uprising.
In Kuwait, where there are around half a million Egyptians, it has
been quiet, and no marches or rallies have taken place. The emirate's
Interior Ministry had warned the country's citizens and foreigners alike about the inadmissibility of unauthorized protests. They will be
considered a violation of the law, the ministry said.
Perhaps someone from the large Egyptian community in Kuwait would like to come to the country's embassy in the evening, but it was impossible physically. The National Guard blocked all entrances and exits around the diplomatic quarter, which houses the embassies of many countries, including Egypt.
According to the TV channel Al-Jazeera, in the Kingdom of Bahrain,
security forces did not let demonstrators approach the building of the
Egyptian embassy in Manama.
