Thai-Cambodian border clashes unlikely to affect formation of AEC

BANGKOK, Feb 11 (TNA) - A spate of clashes along the border between Thai and Cambodian soldiers from February 4-6 is foreseen not to have any serious impact on the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015.

Veerachai Nopsuwannawong, Deputy Director General of Thailand's Trade Negotiation Department, said (Feb 11) that both Thailand and Cambodia are members of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and are likely to settle their political problems favorably, as the Thai and Cambodian governments are expected to enter into negotiations soon; so, the Thai-Cambodian border rows should not affect the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community as scheduled.

Veerachai pointed out that the ASEAN member countries can boost their mutual trade then, and that the planned regional economic integration will particularly benefit Thailand's strong agricultural and service sectors. In the meantime, Veerachai said, the Thai government has implemented measures to assist and strengthen competitiveness of local businesses affected by the planned establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community through its free trade area (FTA) fund, including local cattle and dairy farms, as well as fruit producers.

According to the senior Thai Commerce Ministry official, his department is also organizing seminars to educate and prepare local business operators for the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community over the next four years.

In another development, Veerachai said that negotiations for the Thai-Peruvian free trade agreement has been some 70 per cent progress, and that the agreement should take effect by mid 2012 when mutual tariffs of 70 per cent of their products will be first cut to zero per cent. Bilateral trade between Thailand and Peru has been growing with its value exceeding 414 million US dollars last year, or a 213 per cent surge from the previous year. (TNA)
