Thai government freezes diesel price

BANGKOK, Feb 11 (TNA) - The Thai government announced Friday (Feb 11) that it is freezing the diesel price on the domestic market at 30 baht per liter until the end of April this year or until the state oil fund drops closely to 10 billion baht.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said that the move was a resolution of the National Energy Policy Committee--aimed to relieve financial burdens of people amid vulnerable world oil prices.
Abhisit conceded that his government's diesel price subsidy will cause the state oil fund to lose some five billion baht a month. At present, the state oil fund stands at 22.2 billion baht.
The Democrat premier acknowledged, however, whenever the state oil fund fells closely to 10 billion baht, the Thai government may review the diesel price policy.
Besides, Abhisit said, to solve the shortage of palm oil in the country and to relieve the burden of the National Energy Policy Committee, the Thai government will change the proportion of biodiesel from the B3 formula to the B2 formula until the end of March to reduce demand for palm oil by a certain extent and to cut subsidy funded by the state oil fund by about 600 million baht--until new palm yields alleviate the shortage of palm oil in the country.
