Thailand rejects France's mediation role

BANGKOK, Feb 10 (TNA) - Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban has rejected France's proposal to play a mediation role to end border rows between Thailand and Cambodia.

Suthep, who oversees national security, insisted Thursday (Feb 10) that the ongoing border problems between Thailand and Cambodia should be settled by the two neighbouring countries without any mediation by a third party.

The Thai deputy premier said that neighbouring countries may face some problems and their leaders are to seek ways to settle the bilateral woes peacefully and quickly.

The Thai Democrat deputy prime minister acknowledged that any involvement by France might lead to a further loss of the Thai territory, as being a case in 1962 when Thailand lost the ancient Preah Vihear Temple to Cambodia by the International Court of Justice's verdict based on a French map.

Suthep's comments followed a statement issued by the French Foreign Ministry on Wednesday (Feb 9) that Paris is ready to mediate for a settlement to the ongoing border rows between Thailand and Cambodia. (TNA)
