Somali pirates release S Korea fishing trawler, seize Greek tanker.
NAIROBI (Itar-Tass) - Somali pirates on Thursday released
South Korea's fishing trawler Keummi 305 and seized the Greek tanker Irene
SL.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, there are
39 Kenyans, two South Koreans and two Chinese aboard the Keummi 305. The tanker was seized on October 9, 2010, close to the Kenyan island of Lamu.
It is still unclear whether sea bandits have received ransom. At present, the ship is heading towards international waters, where the vessel will get aid.
Also on Thursday, pirates seized the Greek super tanker Irene SL with
2 million barrels of oil on board off the coast of Oman.
According to available information, the crew of the ship that was en route from the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Mexico, consists of 7 Greeks, 17 Filipinos and a Georgian citizen.
According to Ecoterra International, the pirates currently hold
captive 48 ships and more than 800 sailors.
