Thai, Cambodian FMs to hold talks in New York

BANGKOK, Feb 9 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said Wednesday (Feb 9) that he will soon discuss Thai-Cambodian border issues with his Cambodian counterpart Hor Namhong in New York.

Kasit revealed that he is scheduled to explain to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York on the unsettled border issues between Thailand and Cambodia and will take the opportunity to talk frankly with his Cambodian counterpart, who is also Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister.

Despite the pending issues, Kasit said, Thailand will remain calm and will maintain its friendship with Cambodian people and is ready to assist and cooperate in
projects beneficial to the Cambodians, namely railway projects.

Speaking in a seminar in Bangkok, the Thai foreign minister also acknowledged that Thailand has maintained sound relations with other neighboring countries, including Laos, Vietnam and Malaysia, dismissing a possibility that any neighboring country will conspire with Cambodia to launch any ill-intended plot against Thailand.

In response to Cambodian diplomats' claims that the ancient Khmer Empire had collapsed and many Khmer historical landmarks exist in Thailand, the Thai foreign minister urged Cambodia to admit that the history had passed and to look forward to the future with Thailand.

Meanwhile, Thani Thongphakdi, Director-General of the ministry's Department of Information, said that Kasit was set to leave for New York on February 14. (TNA)
