Uzbekistan, Japan are for development of bilateral relations.
TASHKENT (Itar-Tass) - A meeting with Japan's Emperor
Akihito started the official visit of Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov to Japan on Wednesday.
"Over the meeting, the sides confirmed the steady development of
relations between Uzbekistan and Japan," Uzbekistan's presidential press service said on Wednesday. "They highlighted similarity of the two leaders' views on mutual cooperation, on several problems of regional and international importance."
"The current visit is another expression of mutual deep respect
between Uzbekistan and Japan, of the unanimity of intentions and
aspirations for the development of cooperation based on the principles of trust and interest," Karimov said.
The emperor replied that the meeting with Uzbekistan's president "is a good opportunity to exchange views on further development of cooperation."
On the eve of Karimov's visit, Japan's Hochu Corporation and
Uzbekistan's Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat (NMMC) signed a
long-term agreement on purchase and supplies of uranium concentrate.
Details of the deal are not revealed, but Japan's corporation said
that "the world's demand for uranium will be growing over coming years, and the present 10-year agreement will assure uranium's stable supplies to Japan."
As of 2010, Uzbekistan's deposits of uranium exceed 111,000 tonnes /
twelfth in the world rating/. The country produces about 2.429 thousand tonnes of uranium a year /ranks seventh/.
Japan's investments in Uzbekistan's economy have exceeded 2.3 billion
U.S. dollars.
