Schools in Si Sa Ket near Thai-Cambodian border remain closed

SI SA KET, Feb 9 (TNA) - Some 60 schools in Thailand’s northeastern Si Sa Ket Province near the Thai-Cambodian border have remained closed in the wake of a spate of crossfire between Thai and Cambodian soldiers--which erupted last Friday (Feb 4).
Wanna Bunsuk, director of Si Sa Ket’s fourth primary education area office, said Wednesday (Feb 9) that he has ordered the closure of the schools in Kantharalak and Khun Han Districts for another two days, until February 11, and he will consider whether the schools should be re-opened next Monday (Feb 14).
The schools in the two border districts in Si Sa Ket have been closed since February 7, as the provincial governor has prohibited civilian entry into the areas at risk after the crossfire erupted for the sake of public safety.
Wanna acknowledged that some 25,000 students have been affected by the schools' closure, but his office has sent teachers to open classes for them at all eight temporary shelting centres--set up by the provincial authorities--and will cooperate with donors to provide uniforms and stationary sets to needed students.
