Russia to honour cruiser, gunboat 1904 feat of arms Wed.
INCHON (Itar-Tass) - A traditional ceremony marking the
feat of arms performed by the navy men of the Russian cruiser Varyag and the gunboat Koreyets (a Korean) in 1904 is to be held in the harbour area of Inchon (formerly Chemulpo) on Wednesday. Russian Ambassador Konstantin Vnukov and Colonel Pavel Anisov, the Naval Attache, are to lower a wreath on behalf of the Russian Embassy into the seawater from board a corvette of the South Korean Navy.
The ceremony will be held precisely in the place where the two
combatant ships of the Russian Empire's Navy fought an unequal battle
against the superior forces of the Japanese 14-ship squadron on February 9, 1904. The gunboat was blown up while the cruiser was sunk on an order given by Captain Vsevolod Rudnev so that the two ships would not fall prey to the enemy.
