Turkmen president to visit Bahrain to discuss cooperation
ASHGABAT (Itar-Tass) - Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly
Berdymukhamedov on Wednesday begins an official visit to Bahrain, the
first visit in the history of the two states. The visit opens up the
Turkmen President's tours abroad in the current year.
The Turkmen Foreign Ministry announcement said, "Now that Turkmenistan develops its contacts with Arab East countries actively and comprehensively, an official visit to Bahrain appears to be highly
important and timely. The visit is expected to lay groundwork for a
further successful development of fruitful interstate dialogue both in a bilateral format and within the framework of authoritative regional and international organizations".
The fuel and energy sector is a priority in the interstate interaction between Turkmenistan and Bahrain. The sector is strategic for the economies of the two countries, the Foreign Ministry points out. Ashgabat is also interested in establishing cooperation in the field of investments and tourism and in giving greater scope to contacts in the humanitarian sphere.
"Considering that our two states afford rich natural resources, broad
infrastructure possibilities and a big export potential, Turkmenistan and
Bahrain have a lot of common interests. The proximity of views on many
aspects of global development creates conditions for an effective
partnership in trade-and-economic, energy and transport communication
sectors," the Foreign Ministry announcement emphasizes.
Diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and Bahrain were established in 1995 through the signing of a Joint Communique. Royal family member sheikhs visited Ashgabat more than once. Their visits were accompanied, as a rule, with charity -- ranging from several hundreds to millions of US dollars -- for the construction of clinics or maintenance of children's homes.
