Boat intercepted north of Christmas Island
(AAP) - A boat believed to be carrying 53 asylum seekers has been intercepted north of Christmas Island.
Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said the HMAS Maitland intercepted the vessel on Tuesday morning.
Initial indications suggested there were 53 passengers and two crew on board, Mr O'Connor said in a statement.
The group will be transferred to Christmas Island for security, identity and health checks.
