US Deputy Secretary of State visits Iraq

Baghdad (NINA) – The United States Deputy Secretary of State, Thomas Nides is to visit Iraq this week in his first visit outside the United States since he assumed his office early last January.
A statement issued on Monday, Feb. 7, by the Embassy of the United States in Iraq said that Nides is visiting Iraq this week to discuss transition issues and the of the US-Iraqi partnership under the auspices of the Strategic Framework Agreement.
It emphasized the importance Secretary of State Hillary Clinto places on the ongoing transition from military – to civilian – led US Government presence in Iraq.
The statement went on saying that Deputy Secretary Nides is engaging with Iraqi officials, the U.S. Mission interagency team, and the USF-I counterparts on all aspects of the post 2011 diplomatic presence.
During his visit, Deputy Secretary Nides is meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister, Hoshyar Zebari, Basrah Governor, Shitagh Aboud al-Mayah, Basra Provincial Council Chairman, Jabbar Amin Jaber al-Latif, and Kirkuk Provincial Governor Abdul Rahman Mustafa, the statement concluded.
