ISTANBUL (A.A) - 06.02.2011 - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that Friendship Dam whose foundation would be laid on River Asi would contribute to cooperation between Turkey and Syria.
Prior to his departure for southern province of Hatay, Erdogan said he would be accompanied by Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, Energy Minister Taner Yildiz and Environment & Forestry Minister Veysel Eroglu at a groundbreaking ceremony for the dam to be constructed by Turkey and Syria on River Asi today.
Erdogan said he would proceed to Syria and meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Aleppo.
"Friendship Dam will be an important step for both countries and contribute to prosperity of Turkish and Syrian people," he said.
In regard to developments in Egypt, Erdogan said that he hoped that killings and bloodshed would end there.
Replying to a question, Erdogan said, "we never interfere in decisions of Egypt. Egypt will make a decision on its future with its own democratic will."
Tranquility in Egypt was of great importance for tranquility and prosperity of the region, he said.
Answering a question on protests in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Erdogan said, "it was not an attitude by Turkish Cypriots. It was the attitude of a certain group. This group aims to spoil the peace process by TRNC. I think that TRNC administration will assume necessary attitude against this group."
