Turkish FM Davutoglu says peaceful use of nuclear energy should not be restricted
MUNICH (A.A)- Feb. 6 - Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Saturday that peaceful use of nuclear energy can not be restricted.
Davutoglu, in his speech at a panel meeting held within the scope of the the 47th Munich Security Conference, said conventions signed during the cold war were outdated, calling for a revision of old conventions.
Referring to the conflicts in Caucasus and Korean peninsula, Davutoglu said there was risk of use of nuclear weapons in such conflicts, calling on all countries to abide by conventions. He said certain countries were sceptical of nuclear conventions.
Davutoglu said all countries including Iran had the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, noting that the important thing was scrutinizing use of nuclear energies.
Responding to a question as to why Turkey did not back the proposed sanctions against Iran, Davutoglu said Turkey had bad experiences with sanctions. Referring to sanctions against during the First Gulf War, Davutoglu said the sanctions did not harm the Saddam regime, but Iraqi people and Iraq's neighbours. He said sanctions against Iran would only harm Iranian people.
