No additional arrest warrant for Thaksin's wife
BANGKOK, Aug 13 (TNA) -- Thailand's Criminal Court has not as yet issued an arrest warrant for Pojaman Shinawatra, wife of former prime minister Thaksin, now in the UK, following her failure to appear in court on Monday.
The Criminal Court ruled that she was legally obliged to appear in court by the end of this month at the latest, otherwise an arrest warrant mightbe issued for her.
Mrs. Pojaman had filed an appeal to fight the lawsuit under which the Criminal Court had earlier reached the verdict to send her to a three-year jail term alongside her stepbrother, Bannaphot Damapong, and two-year jail term for her private assistant Kanchanapha Honghern on charges of deliberately evading Bt546 million in personal income tax from the salesof their Shinawatra Computer Communication company stocks.
After the court verdict issued at the end of last month, Pojaman hadplaced a Bt5 million bail bond in exchange for her freedom.
The ex-premier's wife has until August 31 to lodge an appeal to the Appeals Court, delaying effecting the unsuspended verdict of the CriminalCourt.
In one separate case, involving the Bangkok's prime Land purchase charges in Ratchadapisek area, Pojaman and Mr Thaksin had failed to appear before the Supreme Court handling criminal lawsuits against persons with political status and for that reason had their Bt13 million bail seized bycourt order.
Besides, an arrest warrant has been issued for the couple who are reportedly seeking political asylum in England while about Bt76 billion in their frozen wealths might be confiscated on the order of the SupremeCourt as state property.
