Columnist rules out possibility of revolution in Pakistan

Islamabad, Feb 5, IRNA – A Pakistani columnist Friday ruled out possibility of revolution in Pakistan adding that situation of country is not similar to Egypt and Tunisia.
Talking to IRNA, Irfan Siddiqui, however, said that there could be change of leadership in Pakistan within the framework of democracy.

“In Pakistan, democratic system is going very well, independent judiciary is working and freedom of expression is there”, he said.

There are reports in the newspapers, citing diplomats and Pakistani officials, that Pakistan contains many of the same ingredients for prevailing revolts in the Middle East.

Siddiqui said that the situation of Pakistan is very different from Egypt and Tunisia. “The uprising in Middle Eastern countries is against the prolonged dictatorial rules”, he noted.
“People are tired of fake elections by dictators”, he opined.

The analyst went on to say that basic human rights are suspended in Egypt for past many years and the country is in state of emergency but in Pakistani situation is different.

“In Pakistan there is freedom of expression our institutions are working and the people are allowed to say whatever they want”, he added. The journalist said that tensions of the people has gone out through catharsis.

He was of the view that Pakistan is currently facing governance issues as its economy is hollowed out by bad management and corruption. “We have been facing unemployment and poor law and order situation”, he said.

Irfan Siddiqui said these problems can be resolved through proper governance and not through revolution. “What we need is competent and committed leadership”, he observed.

The analyst said that Middle Eastern countries are moving towards transition to democracy. “People are fed up with the US backed dictators”, said the columnist.

Irfan Siddiqui meanwhile said that the US government has much influence on the Egyptian foreign polices which is not acceptable for the Egyptian people.

The senior Pakistani journalist said that as far as Israel is concerned Pakistan is still not surrendering before the American pressure. “I want to say that in Pakistan the sentiments of the people is given weight”, he added.

Mr. Siddiqui also opined that within the upcoming days there could be change of government in Pakistan, but within the framework of democracy. “I don’t foresee any revolution in Pakistan”, he concluded
