Pakistani ministers present resignations: spokesman

Islamabad, Feb 5, IRNA -- Pakistani ministers Friday resigned ahead of dissolution of federal cabinet, spokesman of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), announced.

The PPP Secretary General, Jehangir Badr, said that the ministers from the PPP handed over their resignations to President Asif Ali Zardari during a meeting of the party’s Central Executive Committee.

The meeting empowered Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani to dissolve the federal cabinet and form a small new cabinet, Badr told a news conference.

He said the Prime Minister will use his discretionary powers to dissolve the cabinet with the consent of the President.

President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also the co-chairman of the PPP, presided over the meeting. Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani also attended the meeting.

The Prime Minister will decide timings for the dissolution of the cabinet and he will also be taken other allies for the formation of the new cabinet.

Islamabad had been in grip of rumours of the dissolution of the cabinet due to its poor performance.
The ministers, who have shown good performance over the past three years, will be inducted into the cabinet, the state TV reported.

There are 54 federal ministers and ministers of state in the cabinet. Several advisors, with the status of the ministers, are also currently working. PPP sources said that the new cabinet will be small and several key ministers could be dropped during the exercise.

Local media reported that the new cabinet may be comprised of 10 to 12 ministers.
Reports say that the move to downsize the cabinet is also aimed at improving the image of the PPP, which has been battered by charges of corruption and inefficiency.

President Zardari, Prime Minister Gilani and Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani met on Thursday and reports said that they had discussed possible changes in the cabinet.

The parliament approved a key constitutional amendment last year, under which the size of the cabinet should not be more than 11 percent of the total strength of the parliament.

The National Assembly, lower house of the parliament, has 342 members while the Senate, Upper House of the parliament has 100 members./end
