UK Muslim students hail ‘historic’ Middle East uprisings

London, Feb 5, IRNA – Muslim students in Britain have hailed the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt as a “significant chapter in the history of the Middle East.”
The Federation of Students’ Islamic Societies (FOSIS), which represents over 90,000 students in the UK, said the events, which have been spearheaded by youth and student movements in the region, have “ignited vociferous discussions across British university campuses.”

'The historic events we are witnessing across the Middle East are testament to the passion and desire of a people who wish to break the shackles of oppression and injustice,” said FOSIS president Nabil Ahmed.

“Such scenes will send shivers down the spines of tyrants around the world; no longer will the masses stay silent in the face of such injustice,” Ahmed said.

“Western governments, including our own, should be clear in their condemnation of such totalitarian regimes and allow the people of Egypt and Tunisia to elect a leadership of their own choosing, free from external interference,' he said in a statement obtained by IRNA.

The umbrella group said that in light of the internet blackout imposed by the Egyptian authority and with a sizeable number of Muslim students having family and friends in the region, it would provide regular updates on its website from people on the ground in Egypt.

'FOSIS stands shoulder to shoulder with our Muslim brothers and sisters in Egypt and Tunisia, our prayers and thoughts are with them and those who have lost their lives in this struggle,” Ahmed said.
“We salute the youth and students who have been at the heart of driving this change, a true inspiration for all,” he said.
