After change of regime situation in Tunisia stable - ambassador
ST. PETERSBURG, February 5 (Itar-Tass) -- After the ousting of the
authoritarian regime of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali the situation in Tunisia
can be described as stable and sound development, Tunisia's ambassador to
the Russian Federation, Khemaies Jhinaoui, told a news conference in St.
Petersburg on Friday. The head of the Tunisian tourism office in Russia,
Abderrazak Azzouz, also present at the news conference, acted as the
translator.
The ambassador said that the recent developments in his country were a
popular revolution initiated by youth. It was young people who were
demanded changes to the political leadership, social and economic
transformation and comprehensive renewal. The new government of national
unity has started its activities with the public administration reform,
getting rid of the legacy left by the former ruler, who has fled to Saudi
Arabia after 23 years in office. A great deal is to be accomplished. For
rendering assistance to the government independent structures have formed
three commissions to deal with policy issues, prepare for elections,
formulate social and economic policies and effect civil amnesty.
The ambassador said the current leadership of Tunisia was taking steps
to establish contacts in the international scene. Foreign Minister Ahmed
Ounaies has just paid a visit to Paris. His meetings there were devoted to
Paris's support for Tunisia in gaining the status of a privileged partner
of the EU. In the development of international cooperation Tunisia counts
on assistance from Russia, with which it has always had good, "excellent
relationship."
"We are bound by long-standing friendship and the events of recent
history. Suffice it to recall the presence of the Russian Imperial Navy in
Bizerte," said Jhinaoui.
About the tourism industry the head of the national tourist office of
tourism in Russia Abderrazak Azzouz said that Russia was fifth among the
European countries by the number of holidaymakers traveling to Tunisia on
holiday. Last year there were 188,000 of them. During the revolution, not
a single Russian was harmed. Russians have always been treated with
sympathy and hospitality.
