Forestry minister says Turkey eager to host 10th UN forestry forum
NEW YORK (A.A)-Turkish Environment and Forestry Minister Veysel Eroglu on Thursday said Turkey had formally proposed to host the 10th United Nations Forestry Forum which is set to be held in 2013.
"We have earlier expressed our willingness and today we presented a letter to the United Nations on our desire to host the forum. Turkey would be the best place to hold the event with Istanbul or Antalya as the possible venues," Eroglu told reporters in New York where he participated in the 9th UN Forestry Forum.
Eroglu said the annual UN forum would be held for the first time elsewhere other than New York if the UN accepted Turkey's proposal.
Eroglu said he conveyed Turkey's efforts aimed at afforestation, erosion control, fighting forest fires as well as Turkey's assistance to other countries in the Balkans, Caucasus, Central Asia and in Africa.
The Turkish minister said over one million trees would be planted in Istanbul as part of a program in parallel to a project launched in New York, which aimed at planting 1 million trees by 2017.
"We will plant 1,002,011 siblings in Istanbul on the occasion of UN's proclamation of 2011 as the World Forestry Year. Turkey is among the top three countries in terms of afforestation efforts," Eroglu said.
Separately, Eroglu participated in a penning ceremony for the 9th UN Forestry Forum.
