Roar record to stand for while, says coach
Records may seem to come and go in the fledgling A-League but Brisbane Roar coach Ange Postecoglou believes his side's incredible unbeaten run won't be broken "in a while".
Postecoglou knew first hand just what it took to set the previous streak in Australian domestic soccer.
He was on the receiving end as a South Melbourne player when the legendary Rale Rasic's APIA-Leichhardt stormed through 22 rounds of the 1986-87 national season before tasting defeat.
Looking on as an APIA-Leichhardt side peppered with four Socceroos dictated terms, Postecoglou would have been forgiven back then for thinking the record would never be broken.
But the history books have a new entry after Postecoglou's Roar pushed their unbeaten record to 23 games following last Saturday night's gutsy 2-1 win over Melbourne Heart.
No wonder the usually poker-faced Postecoglou couldn't hide his joy on Friday.
"Because it is a young league records are broken regularly but I think this is a significant one - I don't think it will be beaten in a while," he said.
"That APIA-Leichhardt team, I played against them.
"It was coached by one of the greats of Australian football Rale Rasic and they were a team with four Socceroos so it took a very good side to set up that kind of run.
"And now after 24 years or so we are in the record books and the whole group involved can take pride in that - so yeah, I was pleased."
While taking nothing away from APIA-Leichhardt's previous milestone, the Roar have done it tougher than most to make the record books.
Brisbane flooding ensured the Roar played their last two home games on the Gold Coast in quick succession.
Cyclone Yasi hit the north of the state this week, giving Brisbane another match at their temporary home.
Saturday night's clash with North Queensland in Townsville was postponed due to the incoming system and the teams will now meet on the Gold Coast next Tuesday.
That's just days ahead of their much anticipated regular season finale against arch rivals Gold Coast United at a reopened Suncorp Stadium on February 12.
"We've had a disrupted week but nothing compared to what others have gone through," Postecoglou said.
"We've been able to adjust to all the things that have happened but from Monday we should know what the schedule is and be able to focus on that."
The Roar have received a boost ahead of the finals with the return of skipper Matt McKay from his influential Asian Cup stint with the Socceroos.
Postecoglou said the midfielder had come back better than ever following his Cup heroics - and just in time.
"There may have been a danger if he went away and didn't play much he could come back a little rusty, but the fact that he played and played well worked out pretty well for us - he comes back and gives us a bit of energy at a time when we need it," he said.
