Meares on track to reclaim sprint crown
Olympic and Commonwealth champion Anna Meares, who just broke the women's sprint Australian championship record, is now on track to reclaim the national crown.
The 27-year-old easily won her quarter final match up against West Australian teen Holly Williams on Friday to set up a possible gold medal ride-off with sprint rival Kaarle McCulloch, whose record she eclipsed with a blistering 11.088 seconds ride in qualifying on Thursday.
First though the veteran will have to get past her semi final opponent Cassandra Kell.
McCulloch meanwhile, won her quarter final against the ACT's Catherine Culvenor to set up a semi final sprint clash with South Australian Stephanie Morton.
Meares, who in December's world cup event in Melbourne became the first Australian woman to go under 11 seconds for the flying 200m with her 10.985 second ride, is in ominous sprint form.
And after dominating in the national titles, winning the sprint gold in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009, she will no doubt be looking to reclaim her crown on Friday night from defending champion McCulloch.
Meanwhile, in the men's open team pursuit current world champions Michael Hepburn and Rohan Dennis, who rode as teammates together with Cameron Meyer and Jack Bobridge to claim gold at the last year's world champions, will this time go head to head for the title.
The South Australian team of Dennis, Edward Bissaker, Damien Howson and Glen O'Shea posted the fastest time in qualifying, 4 minutes 6.981 seconds, to set up a final showdown on Friday night with Queensland's Hepburn, Jordan Kerby, Mitchell Mulhern and Nicholas Schultz.
WA's Luke Durbridge, Michael Freiberg, Stephen Hall and Glenn Harris will fight for the bronze with the impressive Under 19 Victorian team of Jack Cummings, Evan Hall, Alexander Morgan and Rick Sanders, who broke the Under 19 Australian championship and All Comers record with their time of 4 minutes 9.867 seconds.
