Two killed in fiery chopper crash
A pilot has survived but two passengers died when a helicopter spiralled in the air before hitting the ground and busting into flames.
The crash at the Cessnock Aerodrome in the NSW Hunter Valley on Friday was so fiery there was nothing rescuers to do, witnesses said.
Flames engulfed the four-seater Robinson R44 helicopter after it hit the ground at the southern end of the airfield about 11.45am (AEDT) while making a landing approach.
The two male passengers died but the male pilot, aged in his 40s, freed himself from the wreckage before it exploded, the Ambulance Service of NSW said.
The pilot suffered partial thickness burns to his arms and was flown to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The names of the dead men have not yet been officially released, but the Seven Network news said one was well known in the helicopter industry.
A witness told Seven the helicopter appeared to lose control and spiralled before hitting the ground and bursting into flames.
A man who identified himself as Robert was working at a nearby vineyard.
He said the aircraft went down next to a regional fire brigades centre and people were on the scene within a minute.
"There was people coming out of the buildings nearby with small (fire) extinguishers but by the time they got there it was well and truly demolished," he told Macquarie Radio.
"There was a lot of black smoke coming from it (and then flames)."
Police said the helicopter was on a re-accreditation training flight when it crashed.
Fire and Rescue NSW and Rural Fire Service officers put out the blaze.
All other aircraft have been diverted from the aerodrome while an investigation takes place.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau and Civil Aviation Authority have been notified, while an officer from the NSW Police Aviation Investigation Branch has also travelled to the scene.
