Russian Railways to invest 540 mln rbls in railway modernisation

VLADVOSTOK, February 2 (Itar-Tass) - The Russian Railways company will invest this year 540 million roubles in modernisation of the railway system.
According to the press service of the Far Eastern Railway,
reconstruction of three bridges will be completed this year, and work to renovate another six bridges at different sections of the railway will be continued.
The main part of the Sakhalin Railway was built by Japan, which
governed the southern part of Sakhalin from 1905 to 1945. Work to rebuild the island railway in accordance with Russian standards began in 2003.
This will raise the competitive strength of the railway, will increase the speed of trains and will enable a more intensive development of region's economy.
Over the recent years new bridges have been built instead of Japanese that have lasted up to 80 years, and some tunnels have been widened. The length of the Sakhalin railway is 804.9 kilometres, and almost half of this railway has at the moment 1,520- millimetre rails, according to Russian standards.
