Egyptian army would not use force against own people: Analyst

Islamabad, Feb 1, IRNA -- A senior Pakistani analyst on Tuesday believed that Egyptian army would not use force against their own people. Western media reports say that Israel has provided the Egyptian government with weapons amid the country's popular uprising demanding the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak.

Talking to IRNA, Orya Maqbool Jan said that movements cannot be stopped by insurgency.

The Western reports followed phone conversations between the US, Egyptian and Israeli defense ministers as the anti-government protests entered the seventh day.

Orya Maqbool Jan said, “Egyptian army could not open fire on their citizens”. The analyst went on to say that US and Israel have to understand that war cannot be won through weapons.

“Egyptian army is lacking fighting spirit as they cannot kill their people”, he added.

He said that movement against Hosni Mubarak would meet its logical end. “I think Egyptian army is not following orders right now and they are with their people”, he opined.

“In 2008 I went to Egypt and found that people were tired of Hosni Mubarak’s 30 year rule”, said the analyst.

Expressing his views the journalist said that U.S. and Israel are worried about the future of Hosni Mubarak because he was the first man to sign Camp David agreement and recognized the illegitimate state of Israel. “No doubt Israel has influence over affairs of Egypt”, said the analyst.

The journalist was of the view that any effort by US or Israel to save Hosni Mubarak would fail.

Orya Maqbool Jan commenting over the role of former IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei in the movement against Egyptian President said that he stands nowhere.

“US wants to give Egypt a dummy leader in the form of ElBaradei”, maintained the analyst.

The protesters in Egypt took to the streets in the sixth day of demonstrations on Sunday despite the warnings and the presence of the army.

The armed forces have threatened a crackdown on anyone who refuses to obey the curfew imposed in major cities.

Meanwhile, Mubarak reportedly visited an army military operations center and met with top army commanders and troops at their headquarters.

Following the visit, the army has received orders to open fire on the protesters in a bid to protect the Mubarak-run regime, according to the Muslim Brotherhood's website.
