1000s of US citizens wish to depart Egypt

New York, Feb 1, IRNA – A top US official said here Monday at lest 2,400 US citizens wish to leave Egypt, have asked for assistance, and their number is expected to increase.
According to IRNA, Deputy Secretary of State Janice Jacob further reiterated early Monday morning local time that 42,000 Us citizens have thus far been evacuated from Egypt who are temporarily residing in Cyprus now and they are all safe and sound.

He said that the US officials are trying hard to provide emergency flights for the US citizens who have no other means for departing Egypt.

The top US official meanwhile pointed out that since a status of curfew has been declared in Egypt, the Egyptian officials are obliged to evacuate the foreigners from that country during the day hours and the restriction might elongate the process of the US citizens’ evacuation into many days.

Jacob added, “we want to make sure to provide assistance for any US citizen who needs our help.”
Over 52,000 US citizens have registered at the US Embassy in Cairo and volunteered to leave that country, but Jacob said it is not expected that that are all wising to depart from the county.

He added that the sick people and those in need of intensive care would be evacuated first, at any rate.
Jacobs said that cutting the internet service by the Egyptian authorities has made offering assistance to US citizens a lot harder for the US officials.

Unrest in Egypt continued into its 7th day as anti-government protests once again faced police on the streets of Cairo.

Egyptian police were back on the streets the capital city Monday after disappearing over the weekend, as thousands of protesters showed no sign of obeying a mid-afternoon government-imposed curfew.
