Pakistani PM condemns killing of 2 Pakistanis by an American
Islamabad, Jan 29, IRNA -- Pakistani Prime Minister, Yusuf Raza Gilani, on Friday condemned the killing of two Pakistanis by an American national in the eastern city of Lahore.
An employee of the US Consulate on Thursday shot and killed two men in a busy commercial area in Lahore while another man died in a road accident involving a speeding car driven by the American's associate, police said.
The US national – identified as Raymond Davis, a member of the staff at the American consulate – opened fire after two armed men riding a motorcycle pulled up alongside his car at a traffic light in the Mozang area of Lahore, city police chief Aslam Tareen said.
“I condemn killing of Pakistanis. It is a tragic incident and should have not been happened,” Prime Minister Gilani told reporters in the port city of Karachi.
He said that the US citizen will face legal process of Pakistan.
The accused US citizen, Raymond Davis, was produced in a court in Lahore and was handed over to the police for questioning.
He will remain in police custody for six days, court officials said.
The Prime Minister said the inquiry is started and the report is awaited. “Everything will be in accordance with the law,” Gilani said.
Law Minister of Punjab province Rana Sanaullah told reporters in Lahore that the US national has been charged for killing two Pakistanis and no foreign pressure will be accepted during the trial.
Sanaullah said the accused has not produced license of his pistol and that he has also been charged for possessing illegal arms.
Relatives of the victims staged demonstration in Lahore and called for hanging of the killer.
Widow of slain man Faizan Haider, 32, told reporters that her spouse had gone to meet his uncle when the American national shot him dead.
“I will commit suicide if the American killer was not hanged,” the widow said while crying along with dozens of relative women, who were also beating chest as protest.
Brother of Fizan had registered case in a police station in Lahore, who charged the American citizen for killing his brother.
Davis, who is now charged in double murder case, told the police investigators on Thursday that he had fired in self-defence as the two motorcyclists had wanted to rob him.
Families of the slain men rejected the claim by the American citizen and said that they were innocent.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik told the National Assembly that the American killer will face legal action, adding that no foreigner is entitled to carry weapons.
The US State Department has said the US will extend all help to the Pakistani authorities in investigation into the matter.
The US officials also said that the name used in the Pakistani press for the American national is not correct./
