Pakistani researcher says IAEA influenced by West

Islamabad, Jan 28, IRNA – A Pakistani researcher on Friday termed as unprecedented the recent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspection of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Talking to IRNA, Zafar Iqbal Cheema said that the IAEA is highly influenced by the West especially by the US.

Iran's envoy to the IAEA Ali-Asghar Soltanieh has said that the UN nuclear agency has inspected the country's nuclear facilities with an unprecedented drive.

'We have had over 4,000 man-day inspections, the most robust inspection in the history of the IAEA,' he said.

Zafar Iqbal Cheema commenting over the recent inspection of Iran’s nuclear facilities said that the IAEA working for last many years has been dominated by the US and that is why they have inspected Iran’s nuclear program in such a manner.

“India was given Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) waiver on the will of US which is not even signatory to Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) so we can see that US has an influence over IAEA policies”, said the scholar.

He added that Pakistan was also affected by the US influence in the IAEA when during a voting on its nuclear program it was not even allowed to cast vote in its own favor.

“US came very heavy on Pakistani Ambassador when he tried to seek favor of some countries in voting through a letter”, he said.

“There should be no doubt left about the discrimination of the IAEA against some countries”, he said.

Zafar Iqbal Cheema opined that Iran is being looked upon suspiciously in developing nuclear program.

“They (West) cannot see a country becoming nuclear power in Middle East which is not pro-American or pro-Western”, he observed.

Responding to a question, Zafar Iqbal Cheema said that deadlock would persist in the upcoming talks between Iran and major world powers to find grounds for cooperation.

He said Iran has been cooperating with the IAEA and has allowed the nuclear watchdog to inspect its nuclear faculties with an open mind.

The scholar was of the opinion that the nuclear proliferation has become a political phenomenon. “Proliferation has become political agenda of some countries’, said the researcher.

Under Western pressure, the UN Security Council imposed a fourth round of sanctions against Iran's financial and military sectors in June.

Tehran argues that as a member of the IAEA and a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the country has the right to use peaceful nuclear energy.

Zafar Iqbal Cheema has been Professor of Defence & Strategic Studies at Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad since 1994, and Meritorious Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences there since 2005.

He has written extensively on a wide range of issues related to Pakistani security and has participated in many international conferences./end
