INDEPENDENCE MILLENNIUM ENDURANCE RACE TO RECORD HIGHEST PARTICIPATION
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Due to its popularity, the Merdeka Millennium 12-hour Endurance Race (MME) this year will record its highest participation since its inception in 2000.
Sepang International Circuit (SIC) General Manager Azmi Murad said after organising the race for the ninth time this year, MME had receivedoverwhelming participation from local and international teams.
"As of now, we have received a total of 74 entries for the four categories.
We are expecting more than last year's 103 participations," he said.
The four categories and current number of entries are in the open class (19 entries), 20 for class A (production cars above 1900cc), 15 for class B(1601-1900cc), and 20 for class C (below 1600cc).
"We have a lot of new entries this year and a lot of interests from local and international teams including Petronas Syntium Team and Honda MalaysiaRacing Team, the favourite to win in Class A," he said.
"We should have more than 103 entries when the closing date is on Aug 16. We are still accepting late entries up to Aug 28 but we impose a penalty of RM1000," he said, adding the registration fees for Class A and the open class are RM4,000, while for Class B and C teams must pay RM3,400 and RM3,000,respectively.
Meanwhile, twice MME overall champions, Team Proton R3 is targeting forpodium finish in class B and C.
Head of Proton Motorsports, Tengku Djan Ley said test driver Faidzil Alang and former Proton Production car champion Hafizy Hafiz would drive a Proton Satria Neo, while Sutan Mustafa, Hammond Lai and Tengku Ezan would steer WajaPTS, to bring home the coveted class B title.
In class C, a team of drivers will race in a Proton Gen 2.
"We have set a target of 2 minutes 38 seconds for the qualifying round, a marked improvement than last year as a result of the team's involvement in AsianTouring Car Series.
The qualifying would be held on Aug 29 and the actual race will be flaggedoff at 11.45pm on Aug 30 (Saturday) and ends at 11.45pm on Aug 31.
