NSW wins Australian 'tong challenge'
NSW wins thong challenge at Bondi Beach
NSW has beaten four rival states in an Australia Day thong challenge.
By floating 2068 inflatable thongs in the water at Bondi Beach, Sydney managed to break last year's record of 1301 held by Cottesloe Beach in Western Australia.
Cottesloe was Bondi's strongest contender this year with 1947 thongs floated in the water for the latest challenge.
Torquay Beach in Victoria was in third place with 1185 thongs and Mooloolaba Beach in Queensland was next with 1167 thongs.
Bringing up the rear was Glenelg Beach in South Australia with just 443 thongs in the water.
"It's a great mood down here. Everyone went crazy when our MC John Mathison announced the final number," said Florence Sandford, spokeswoman for the fifth annual Havaianas Thongs Challenge on Wednesday afternoon.
"Now everyone's just walking around the beach carrying the giant thongs."
