Turkey and Ukraine agree to debate free trade and visa exemption
KIEV (A.A) - The Turkish prime minister said on Tuesday that Turkey and Ukraine had agreed to start debating free trade and visa exemption issues.
Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is currently visiting Ukraine, met with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in Kiev.
After their gathering and talks between Turkish and Ukrainian delegations, the two officials attended the signing ceremony of an agreement on the establishment of a high-level strategic council between their countries, and later held a joint press conference.
Speaking at the press conference, Erdogan said that Turkey and Ukraine, in an effort to improve their economic and commercial ties, desired to implement free trade and visa exemption agreements as soon as possible.
Erdogan said, to that end, necessary orders had been given to intensify the negotiations.
Noting that he held a fruitful meeting with Yanukovych, Erdogan said they had agreed to turn the existing friendship and cooperation ties between their countries into a strategic partnership.
Erdogan said that the agreement signed today on the establishment of a high-level strategic council between Turkey and Ukraine would serve such goal.
Pointing to the trade volume between the two countries, the prime minister said that both countries had the power and potential to increase their 5 billion USD trade volume to 20 billion USD in the next 5 years and to 40 billion USD in the next 10 years.
"We are two important countries of Europe and the Black Sea region," he said.
Yanukovych said in his part that the high-level strategic council between Turkey and Ukraine would be an important coordination mechanism for the bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Yanukovych also noted that Turkey and Ukraine mainly desired to cooperate on issues related to energy, transportation, defense industry and visa exemption.
