Eight Thai villagers freed from Myanmar

TAK, Jan 19 (TNA) - Eight Thai villagers--who were held captive by Myanmar soldiers Wednesday morning (Jan 19)--have all been released following successful talks between Thai and Myanmar authorities concerned.
Potch Rhuworanont, Phop Phra District Chief of Thailand's northwestern Tak Province, confirmed that the eight Thai villagers who were arrested in the Myanmar territory when they were fishing and foraging, were freed from the Myanmar military’s 3rd strategic command at around 11:40am. Potch said the eight Thais are expected to return to their homes in Ban Ork Hoo Village of Valey Sub-district in Phop Phra this evening.
Meanwhile, Tak Governor Samart Loyfa revealed that only three out of the eight villagers arrested by Myanmar legally held Thai identity (ID cards); while the remaining five are under an official probe on their legal status, although they were identified as natives in the area, before Thai IDs and census are to be officially issued for them.
The provincial governor also cautioned locals living near the Thai-Myanmar border not to stray into the Myanmar territory or near its battle grounds for the sake of their own safety from being arrested by Myanmar security officers or accidentally stepping onto buried mines in the border. (TNA)
