DUSHANBE, January 19 (Itar-Tass) - Tajik police arrested 119 people
involved in the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Hizb ut-Tahrir, and
Tablighi Jamaat last year, two Al-Caeda militants among them, delivering a
serious blow to extremists and terrorists, the republic's Interior
Minister Abdurakhim Kakhkharov told a news conference on Wednesday.
"Ten gunmen from the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, who offered armed
resistance during the arrest, were destroyed," Kakhkharov said.
In 2010, police confiscated more than 50,000 copies of extremist
literature. During operations to neutralize illegal paramilitary
formations, ten police officers were killed, according to the minister.
Commenting on the situation in the Rasht district, Kakhkharov said the
largest anti-government groups had been defeated, and that the leader of
one of them - Alovuddin Davlatov - had been destroyed together with seven
of his associates.
Police in the region are looking for another field commander,
nicknamed Mullo Abdullo, and a handful of his supporters.
On Tuesday, President Emomali Rakhmon called for stepping up the fight
against religious extremism and terrorism at an expanded government
meeting, which summed up last year's results.
"Practice shows that terrorism, in all times, has been aimed against
the government, at unsettling the socio-political situation, and
ultimately, seeding panic and fright, and the society's mistrust in
government bodies," the Tajik leader underlined.
In this connection, he demanded that secret services and other
law-enforcement bodies quickly expose organizers, perpetrators, the
sources of funding, as well as the terrorists' masters, and give them the
punishment they deserve.
